Symposium on Prospects for China-Japan Strategic Reciprocal Relations in the New EraSuccessfully Held


On March 9, 2024, the Prospects for China-Japan Strategic Reciprocal Relations in the New Era symposium, co-hosted by Tongji University’s China Institute for Strategic Studies, the School of Politics and International Relations, and Japan’s Yamanashi Gakuin University, was successfully held at Tongji University. Attendees included notable Chinese and Japanese scholars and university leaders, such as Lü Peiming, Executive Vice President of Tongji University, and Takako Aoyama, President of Yamanashi Gakuin University.

In his opening remarks, Vice President Lü emphasized Tongji’s commitment to collaborative academic exchanges with East Asian institutions and expressed hope for strengthened strategic cooperation between China and Japan based on recent bilateral discussions. President Aoyama underscored Yamanashi Gakuin University’s dedication to internationalization and its commitment to furthering educational exchanges with Chinese universities.

During the forum, scholars from both countries discussed various themes related to China-Japan relations. Professor Atsushi Kamijo of Yamanashi Gakuin University examined Japanese housing policies and their potential lessons for China, focusing on the evolution of urban housing challenges. Professor Wu Xinye from Tongji University presented a comparative analysis of community building in China and Japan, highlighting collaborative governance and citizen participation as key takeaways for China.

Further discussions included perspectives on Northeast Asia’s trilateral relations, with Professor Xia Liping exploring the triangular relationship between China, Japan, and the United States and its impact on regional stability. Professor Liu Shuli discussed Japan's view of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) and its significant trade implications for Japan and China. Additionally, Associate Professor Li Boying analyzed emerging opportunities for China-Japan economic collaboration, particularly in strategic sectors under RCEP's framework.

The symposium concluded with remarks from President Aoyama, who expressed optimism about deepening academic and practical cooperation to benefit both nations. Vice President Lü reiterated the importance of leveraging new opportunities for bilateral and multilateral cooperation to advance China-Japan strategic relations, noting that sustained collaboration requires guidance from political leaders and active public engagement to overcome challenges and create a prosperous future together.
